Milk does a body good

After Comme Ca, I had a meeting here. This place is fun, hip, and with tons of variety for dairy on ice. It reminds me a lot of Sweet Rose in Brentwood, which I also love.

I got the citrus float.

Citrus Vanilla Float
blood orange sorbet, lime sorbet, and vanilla bean ice cream with creme soda

Please go at least once. It's yummy... just expensive.

4 Restaurants, 4 Minutes

I have a paper to write, a book to read, and art to make. Technically, I should not be blogging... BUT I decided to give myself 5 minutes to give you a glimpse into my first week of DineLA.

Thursday, 10/7 for lunch
Lucques

The plan for Lucques was dinner with 5 other friends, but as I checked the menu, I realized lunch was the only DineLA offering. As such, my friends bailed and opted for another restaurant. Just as I was about to cancel our reservation, I noticed that my sister posted on her facebook profile how much she loved their lunch and that the trout was a MUST. My curiosity was piqued.

Reservation for 1.

Here is the menu:

Lunch $28*

*Price excludes alcohol, tax and gratuity.

Choice of Appetizers
corn soup with poblanos and pepitas
market lettuces with green goddess dressing, radish and cucumber
fall fruit salad with prosciutto, almonds and saba

Choice of Entrees
polenta with summer squash, pecorino, salsa verde and breadcrumbs
mustard chicken salad with spinach, bacon and soft egg
grape leaf wrapped trout with green rice, nasturtiums and dill yogurt

Choice of Desserts
date and brown butter bar with crème fraîche and orange sherbet
vanilla semifreddo with gaviota strawberries and almond croustine
bittersweet chocolate tart with crushed honeycomb and coffee ice cream

I opted for the corn soup... which was disappointing. I will almost always order soup when it's on a menu, but I regretted it this time around. It's not that it was bad, but it was boring. To some degree the green beans in the soup tasted canned.

Of course, I got the trout. Highlight of the meal.

The green rice on its own is bland, but the trout was magnificent. I think it's all about the grape leaf. The trout was served boneless and in place of a skeleton was the perfect amount of lemon juice. It was the perfect level of citrus to keep my mouth interested.

I ended with the bittersweet chocolate tart, which was good, but mostly because I LOVE honeycomb!!!!

The manager offered to sit with me, but I said no. Wasn't sure if that was a wee bit awkward. ;)

Thursday, 10/7 for dinner
Angeli Caffe

So Lucques was replaced with Angeli Caffe for the evening. Here's the menu:

Dinner $26*

*Price excludes alcohol, tax and gratuity.

Choice of Appetizers
Mixed Antipasti Plate (Roasted Pepper Salad w Goat Cheese, Olives and Croutons
Sweet and Sour Eggplant Caponata)
Ricotta tart with Roasted Heirloom Sauce
Insalata Forte
Scamorza alla Griglia (broiled smoked mozzarella topped with chopped tomatoes and oregano)

Choice of Entrees
Butternut Squash-Fontina Lasagne topped with Seared Mixed Mushrooms
Ricotta Gnocchi served with Melted Butter and Parmesan or Heirloom Tomato Sauce
Pollo Arrosto (Our famous succulent half chicken, marinated w/garlic, fresh rosemary and lemon, then roasted)

Choice of Desserts
Almond Olive Oil Cake with Seasonal Fruit Compote
Tirami Su
Chocolate Chunk Bread Pudding

I got the smoked mozzarella which was basically a plate of melted cheese and tomatoes. It wasn't very interesting and definitely needed a texture contrast. Maybe some toasted bread!

I also opted for the chicken, which was quite the hearty portion, but not very tasty. It needed to be seasoned better, but the roasted vegetables were good.... granted they were swimming in chicken juice.

Then I got the chocolate bread pudding which basically made my meal. SOOOO good. It wasn't too chocolatey or sweet. It was perfect. I would return solely for that.

At an adjacent table sat Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore. I kid you not. One of the gals I was having dinner with went up to speak to them about a documentary she produced on sex trafficking. They were sweet and even more attractive in person. Demi is basically the size of my thigh. I had no idea that was the place for potential celebrity encounters.

Although I'm not eager to rush back, I did hear the pizza is good, but it wasn't offered on the DineLA menu. Not sure that Angeli is worth the hype.

Friday, 10/8 for dinner
The London in West Hollywood

This place looks like a bordello in the late 1700s. I wasn't sure if I should be eating or looking away from the wayward glances of others. It just seemed confused in terms of ambiance.

But we're here for the food.

Dinner $44*

*Price excludes alcohol, tax and gratuity.

Choice of Appetizers
Apple & Goat Cheese Salad with Cider Vinaigrette
Risotto- Rock Shrimp with Mascarpone Cheese
Veal Sweetbreads, Wild Mushrooms & Mustard

Choice of Entrees
Baked Halibut with Chorizo, White Beans & Pasta
Pan-Roasted Chicken, Yukon Potato with a Lemon Sauce
Braised Prime Beef Short Rib, Potato Mousseline & Caramelized Onions

Choice of Desserts
Pumpkin Cheesecake - Nutmeg & Graham Cracker
Valrhona Dark Chocolate Crunch - Praline Crunch, Caramelized Banana & Yuzu Sorbet
Baked Apple with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream & Crisp Tuile

I got the risotto, which was a one note. And that was one mushy cheesy note.

The braised short rib was really good, but it was also VERY fatty. The potato mouselline actually tasted like instant potatoes, too. Outside if the fattiness, though, I did enjoy every bite of my meat.

As for dessert I chose the Valrhona Dark Chocolate Crunch. It was pretty much a wafer cookie with nutella on it. BUT the yuzu sorbet made it worthwhile. I'm still craving the yuzu!

They also made me a mocha, though it wasn't on the menu. It was pretty good. Definitely potent. I was up until 4am that night!

Sunday, 10/10 for lunch
Comme Ca

Lunch $28*

*Price excludes alcohol, tax and gratuity.

Choice of Appetizers
SALADE FRISEE AUX LARDONS - Warm bacon vinaigrette, poached egg.
BUTTER LETTUCE SALAD - Lemon Shallot Vinaigrette, shaved carrots, baby tomatoes, herb croutons.
SOUPE A L'OIGNON GRATINEE - Melted Gruyere, crostini, chives

Choice of Entrees
The Comme Ca Burger - Certified Angus beef, cheddar, lettuce, onion, dressing.
Bruno's Quiche - Savory Egg tart, filled with gruyere and shallots.
Scottish Salmon - Artisanal polenta, oyster mushrooms, sauce maltaise.

Choice of Desserts
Lemon Tart - Lemon curd filling, meringue, blueberries, basil ice cream.
Brioche Chocolate Pudding - Valrhona bittersweet chocolate, creme anglaise, vanilla bean ice cream.
Profiteroles - Creme Chantilly, chocolate sauce, vanilla bean ice cream.

Appetizer: Glass of Wine - We will be including a glass white or red wine with lunch ONLY.

So I am taking longer than anticipated... if you can't tell my comments are getting shorter.

I got the soup, burger, and lemon tart...and a glass of rose.

First of all, it took about 35 minutes or so after we ordered to get our appetizers. It definitely felt like a lesson in waiting. The soup was actually pretty good... but it could have been because it was 50% cheese, 30% onions and crostini, and 20% soup. Oh how I love cheese.

By the time the burger came around, I was stuffed. I only ate half of it, but I did think it was pretty good. I LOVED the fries though.

The tart was all kinds of awful. It was too sweet, the crust was too thick, and it didn't really go well with the basil ice cream. So I just ate half of it and all the ice cream. The ice cream was actually really good.

Overall, I wouldn't necessarily go again, except for maybe brunch. The morning cocktails looked amazing! I was so tempted to get the hot pepper smash, but I opted against it. I would so go back just to try it.

There you have it... although I think I took 40 minutes. :-/

The Simple Pleasures

Usually when people describe my life, the first word that comes out of their mouths is "busy". And I'll admit... my days are generally spent in the hectic. Visiting my sister, bro, and niece in NY has been amazing for me. A great time to slow down and relish in the moment. As much as a to-do list nags my neurons, little Allegra sure erases the thought with her precious little smile.

As she sleeps, I am reminded of many of the simple pleasures I often take for granted. The things that are readily available to me that pretty much make my day. Those tasty treats that don't cost me my tuition... Here are a few:

Snyder's Hot Buffalo Wings Pretzel Pieces and a Coca Cola hecha en Mexico.

Things to know:
1. Hot Buffalo Wings is a whole new flavor in Snyder's of Hanover's repertoire. Their original honey mustard totally kicks tail, too!
2. You MUST get the pretzel pieces. NOT the pretzel bites. The pieces are far more flavorful.
3. It's not spicy, but it's got enough of a punch to surprise your buds with each bite.
4. Nothing washes it down like a Cola with real sugar. You gotta counterbalance the artificial flavor of the wings with some real sugar, right?!

The Stars at the Bucks

So... I'm not high maintenance... I just know what I want. Here are a few things I firmly believe must be ordered at least once in your life, unless you're me, then near daily!

1. Grande Iced Chai latte with soy in a Venti cup with a shot of espresso.
2. Tall Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate in a Grande cup with half pumps, soy, and a shot of espresso.

Clearly I like me some espresso...

And for food...

1. The Protein Plate! Yes yes yes!
2. The petite vanilla bean scone... perfection. Heaven's to Betsy, this puppy is perfection.

Indulge me... try at least one of these treats. You'll find them to be indulgences you want to repeat.

When 3 times is a charm and when it isn't

I had dinner with an old friend this past Monday. Since he was coming to me in Pasadena, I let him choose the cuisine. Mexican or Italian are his old standbys. I opted for Mexican and sought the best Mexican restaurants in Pasadena.

My search rendered me 3 options: Mijares, El Portal, and El Cholo. I had been to Mijares and El Cholo before so I was hoping to go to El Portal. Lo and Behold... it was closed. My friend opted for Mijares instead.

I wasn't going to argue. I led us both to a dead end and I just wanted a resolution to abdicate me of any guilt. But here's the thing, I had been to Mijares twice before. Once for another dinner with an old friend a few years ago and again for my high school reunion. The only thing memorable about my time there in the past was an unexpected reaction to their margaritas during my reunion.

We both ordered the Bistec Picado a la Raul. He got a regular margarita; I tried the spa margarita (only 125 calories!).

The food wasn't bad... but it certainly wasn't good. It was more of a Mexican version of sweet and sour beef with cafeteria rice and beans. For the best Mexican restaurant in Pasadena, I was hoping for a better experience. The tastiest part of my meal should not be the chips and salsa solely because it is really hard to fuck up chips and salsa.

Please do not go to Mijares to eat unless you don't care about quality or caloric intake. Mijares should only be visited for their margaritas, especially if you are hoping for a cheap date. They are surprisingly strong, simply because they taste SO good. Just one will surely kick you in the knees. And the spa margarita packs a lot of punch for so few calories! Honestly there is no reason to go other than that.

The following day I willingly visited Pete's Cafe in Downtown LA. There is no reason to not go. This is my third visit and each one has left me smiling. The food isn't fancy, but it is simply good. Everything I have tried, I've loved.

Last night I got the asparagus risotto and split their chipotle fries with a friend. This was one incredibly cheesy meal. When I ordered the fries, I somehow expected that to mean they'd be sprinkled with chipotle dust not cheese and parsley. I can't say I tasted the smoky jalapeno, but who can argue with deep fried anything smothered in cheese?!

The risotto was far cheesier than I expected, but the crab was fresh and the cheesy indulgence was perfectly cut by the bits of lemon flesh that was mixed in it. The lemon was definitely a pleasant surprise.

Other things I've tried and recommend: Crispy oyster spoons, roasted beet salad, strip steak served with blue cheese fries, and the beef short ribs. I actually haven't met a dish there I didn't like.

Pete's Cafe is that go-to place for classic favorites when you don't want to think, but want a meal that feels like a hug of goodness.

The first thing you need to know

Schneider Bixby III of Chesterton

If there is anyone to meet.... anyone to please.... first and foremost, it is Sir Bixby.

This, my friends, is my stomach. It's true, I have named my tummy. Not only does my stomach have a name, but it is male. If you got to know Schneider, you would learn he has a personality. He will make it known when he needs to be fed (he's actually a bit of a screamer, which to an untrained ear may sound like gurgles or growls). He nearly doubles in size after a hearty meal and can handle pretty much anything you dish. Trust me, Schneider can and WILL eat nearly anything.

I pat Schneider every now and then to make sure he is okay and assure him that food is bound to come his way. The most important thing is that I take care of him, lest he messes my reputation with his other friends (known to normal folk as my other body parts).

Should you choose to invest your time in my perspectives on the palatable, you should be warned:

1. I don't eat pork (so neither will Schneider).
2. I also don't eat carrots, cute animals, or creatures I have seen whole
3. Seafood is the exception to the whole animal rule, although if a fish looks like it was screaming right before its death, Mr. Bixby doesn't get a bite of it, either.
4. I live for spice.
5. And yes, I did name my stomach.

If after all this, you're interested... grab a fork and let's get eating!
